        Subject: the concept of modelling?

Dear colleagues,

This morning I received the following inquiry from a doctoral student in
Russia preparing to defend his dissertation in history. Comments on his
question would, I'm sure, be quite helpful.

> [...] I am a historian preparing a dissertation for the Candidate of
> Sciences degree in History, to be defended at the Institute of World
> History of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The dissertation
> reconstructs the history of the digitisation of ancient Greek and
> Latin texts from the 1940s to the present, including machine-
> readable corpora, databases, encoding standards, interfaces, and
> research infrastructures...
>
> I am contacting you because your work is directly relevant to the
> problem identified in my dissertation as “How the concept of
> modelling changed in humanities computing”. I am interested not only
> in published results, but also in the decisions, working practices,
> and institutional changes that shaped this area.
>
> I am trying to establish the history behind how the concept of
> modelling changed in humanities computing. Which concrete decision
> or episode best illustrates it? What changed as a result, and where
> can I verify the sequence in project documentation, publications,
> code, or correspondence?
>
> I am not asking for a general introduction to the field. A small
> number of precise references would be most useful: a project report,
> archived website, repository, mailing-list discussion, personal
> paper, or the name of someone who took part in the relevant work...

I'll gather up any responses from you and send them on to him.

All best,
WM
