Dear Digital Humanities colleague,

Applied Data Analysis

This advanced strand offers a stepping stone for those who have begun to learn
Python and want to apply it in their own work and research. It provides a
practical foundation for humanities scholars and GLAM professionals, covering
topics including: python packages for data analysis (pandas); how to get from
messy to tidy data; basics of data analysis and visualization (matplotlib and
plotly); geo mapping (geopandas); network analysis (networkx and gephi); and a
range of natural language processing methods.

“The convenors were patient, clear, and always ready to help. Their support and
guidance made a big difference to the learning experience. Overall, it was an
intense but very rewarding week, and I came away with practical skills I can use
in my own work.”

2025 participant, Applied Data Analysis strand

Learning Objectives:
• Learn how to use the main Python libraries for data wrangling and
analysis to perform a variety of practical tasks (e.g. exploration, reporting,
visualization).
• Apply the main data analysis tools and techniques in dealing with
cultural data.
• Critically understand the surplus-value and limitations of data
analysis from a humanities perspective.

Convenors:
Ellen Charlesworth (University of Luxembourg)
Alexander Shiarella (University of Oxford)

This workshop strand is run in collaboration with the Luxembourg Centre for
Contemporary and Digital History (C²DH).

“Attending DHOxSS set a new course for my research and teaching, and I cannot
stress enough how incredible this learning experience has been.”
