        Subject: 'AI' as the starting point rather than subject

The following announcement of "Interdisciplinary Post-doc and PhD
positions at the University of Tübingen" on Air-L
<air-l@listserv.aoir.org> is, I suspect, one of many. What interests me
about it is its orientation to 'AI', which is as commonly taken to be an
unquestioned entity and from which various kinds of non-technical
research proceed. Where, I wonder, are the postdocs and PhD studentships
to fund and encourage research into the juggernaut itself from the
perspectives of history, philosophy, anthropology, sociology &al rather 
than its 'impact'? Would it not be beneficial to our common purposes 
to have news of these?

My impression (for what it's worth) is that digital humanities as a whole 
does the same generally, proceeding outward from computational 
implementations to their effects, as if to demonstrate relevance  
to established interests. If this somewhat provocative statement is 
wrong, contradictions would be welcome. Surely the artists are not 
doing what I've described.
