        Subject: social media

At some point during my several working sojourns in Australia I fell in
love with the country and found Meanjin, "where Australia’s literary
culture sets out its fiercest ambitions." This was my second
introduction to the quality of writing in that country. I subscribed and
continue to read its online publications. This morning I was sent notice
of Patrick Lenton's 2023 essay on social media, "Why does Elon Musk, the
largest clown in the clown car, simply not eat the other clowns?"* A few
will know of Humanist's dark and thankfully brief relationship with
Twitter, but that's not why I'm writing. It's because I think many here
will enjoy one hugely important aspect from the online world of the
interesting times in which we live. (And some will subscribe to Meanjin,
finding much of value to read.)

Remember when the Internet was celebrated as a great actor in the
liberation and fellowship of all?

Yours,
WM
