Subject: Job Posting: Early Modernist + DH @ San Jose State University (CSU-CA)

Hi All,

SJSU English Dept is searching for an Assistant Professor in Early Modern
studies
<https://jobs.sjsu.edu/en-us/job/543037/assistant-professor-of-early-modern-
literature>
with a focus on emergent technologies.

Due date: November 15!

The ad signals expertise in "emergent technologies" as a way to offer wide
latitude to the person who is hired. This person can be within the Digital
Humanities community or in some way affiliated and working through
technologies in their pedagogy or research. I'm on the search committee (as
the resident Digital Humanist) as a guide for other committee members in
terms of the use of tech by each applicant. I'm looking forward to seeing
the incredible work of many Digital Humanists surfaced during this process!

There are lots of good things about SJSU beyond what's in the job ad. As
someone who has spent almost 20 years here, I've found my niche both on
campus and through my larger DH community. The person hired will have:

   1. a Dean who is incredibly supportive of innovative projects
   2. a 2/3 or 3/3 teaching load per semester thanks to the start up
   package for this position
   3. lots of internal grant opportunities for professional development
   funds or course release/assigned time
   4. lots of public programming to produce and/or offer to your students (H&A
   in Action
   <https://www.sjsu.edu/ha-in-action/engage/current-events/index.php>)
   5. an internal grant
   <https://www.sjsu.edu/ha-in-action/apply/grant-resources.php> in the
College to support public humanities & arts public programming (lead by me!)
   6. a generous RTP policy (S15-8
   <https://www.sjsu.edu/senate/docs/S15-8.pdf>) (authored by the Academic
   Senate + a department
   <https://sjsu.edu/english/docs/policy-
guidelines/English%20Department%20approved%20guidelines%205.31.2016.pdf>
RTP policy that offers options for research publication modality)
   7. a new-ish president
   <https://www.sjsu.edu/president/meet-the-president/biography/index.php>
who is keen to make sure SJSU is known in all ways
   8. an HSI and AANAPISI designation and working to implement those
   designations - Somos Framework

TZg/edit#heading=h.ns5wl6lkx6fp>
   9. a strong Academic Senate <https://www.sjsu.edu/senate/>
   10. a DH@CSU Consortium <https://dhatcsu.hcommons.org/> with contact to
   18/23 other CSU campuses/faculty/staff/librarians
   11. a strong union <https://www.calfac.org/> that negotiates annual
   raises
   12. other Digital Humanists on campus
   <https://library.sjsu.edu/digitalhumanities/faculty-research> + real
physical space in the DH Center in King Library (as we finish up year 4 of
a 5-year NEH Infrastructure Grant award)
   13. an incredible public/university library
   <https://libguides.sjsu.edu/library-history> collaboration with library
faculty who are experts at creating community engagement
   14. help with crafting external grant proposals from the Associate Dean,
Office of Research, and pre/post award staff. (Lots and lots of help
   running grants here.)

I'm happy to answer questions as a member of the search committee before we
begin to review applications in November. (If you have questions about the
progress of your application, please use the email in the job ad.)

All my best and good luck!
Kathy
