Humanist Discussion Group, Vol. 38, No. 130. Department of Digital Humanities, University of Cologne Hosted by DH-Cologne www.dhhumanist.org Submit to: humanist@dhhumanist.org Date: 2024-09-03 15:38:35+00:00 From: Wachter, Christian <christian.wachter@uni-bielefeld.de> Subject: Call for contributions (short audio files) to a multimodal edited volume on digital methods in the humanities within German-speaking countries Dear Colleagues, I am excited to share with you a call for contributions (short audio files) to a multimodal edited volume on digital methods in the humanities within German- speaking countries: Call for Contributions: Short audios for “5 questions - 1 answer” wanted for the category “In your own words” of the edited volume “From Global to Local? Digitale Methoden in den Geisteswissenschaften im deutschsprachigen Raum: Ein Triptychon”! In March, our editorial team issued a “Call for Abstracts” for the upcoming edited volume “From Global to Local? Digitale Methoden in den Geisteswissenschaften im deutschsprachigen Raum: Ein Triptychon“ Link: https://dhd-blog.org/?p=20783 We are now excited to announce a “Call for Contributions” for the category IN YOUR OWN WORDS as part of our community outreach! The edited volume “From Global to Local?” aims to critically examine the implications of the evolving Digital and Computational Humanities in German- speaking countries for the self-conception of the humanities and cultural studies. It will explore the epistemic promises of digital methods and whether the transformative potential of computing in the humanities has been fully realized both in research and public spheres. Central to this investigation is the question of the future and unity of DH, tightly interwoven with the challenges of curriculum development and academic self-organization. This project will focus on the German-speaking world, offering a multiperspective and multimodal examination of both the local and international histories and forms of digital humanities in this region. Our editorial approach is open and inclusive: The linear, chronological “grand narrative” will be “broken up” by organizing the book as a triptych, allowing space for a variety of perspectives and voices. The editorial team plans to coordinate the following components of the triptych: - Melanie Seltmann & Christopher Nunn: BE-FORSCHEN (RESEARCH): “Traditional” articles - Ulrike Wuttke & Anne Baillot: IN EIGENEN WORTEN (IN YOUR OWN WORDS): Audio(visual) formats - Christian Schröter (née Vater) & Christian Wachter: ARTEFAKTE (ARTEFACTS): Biographies of artifacts related to the use of computers in the humanities We invite the community to submit short audio contributions (in German or English) under the theme "5 Questions – 1 Answer," addressing ONE of the following questions: 1. What is the contribution of DH to the self-understanding of Humanities disciplines? 2. Are the transformative potentials of computer use for the Humanities already exhausted? 3. Which national specificities characterize DH in the German-speaking area and is there something like a continental tradition of DH? 4. What voices are underrepresented under the DH big tent? 5. Where do you see DH 10 years from now? If selected, your contributions will be featured in audio segments that will likely be included in the multimodal edited volume, as well as in the media repository of the University of Luxembourg and distributed as a podcast under the CC BY-SA 4.0 license and a PID. Key Guidelines: - Length: 1-3 minutes max (Please answer only ONE of the five questions!) - Please structure your recording as follows: Brief introduction (first and last name, institution if applicable), e.g., “Hello, my name is XY…”, read the question you are answering, e.g., “I will answer the following question: (read question)…” Recording Tips: - Pause briefly before answering the question to ease processing - Speak clearly without sounding rehearsed - Use a (good) headset or, if unavailable, a computer microphone - Record in a quiet room with minimal echo (yes, the closet is best!) - Feel free to do a sound check Submission and Format: - We can only use your recording if it is accompanied by a consent form allowing publication under the CC BY-SA license (link to download the template: https://fhpcloud.fh-potsdam.de/s/gJ5Aj8monYdsFs9). - Format: MP3 (File drop via FHP-Cloud with a clear file name (LASTNAME_FIRSTNAME): https://fhpcloud.fh-potsdam.de/s/J3ZpabsMjsrcFpS - We strongly encourage you to provide additional information related to your answer. Submit these details (e.g., a bibliography/links for the show notes) along with your audio file with a clear file name (LASTNAME_FIRSTNAME). Please submit your files by September 30, 2024. You will be notified if your file is accepted for publication. Contact details in the consent form (see above) are necessary for this purpose. If you are interested in participating but are unsure, have questions, or lack the necessary technology, please reach out to lead editor Ulrike Wuttke or the editorial team at global-local-dh@listserv.dfn.de, and we’ll find a solution. We look forward to your submissions!
