Call for Papers: IRIE Volume 35 – Managing Migration: Advanced Digital
Technologies and the Movement of People

https://informationethics.ca/index.php/irie/cfp-33

We are pleased to announce the Call for Papers for Volume 35 of the
International Review of Information Ethics (IRIE), focusing on the intersection
of advanced digital technologies (ADTs) and migration management.

The use of advanced digital technologies (ADTs) in migration management has
notably increased in recent years, facilitating the processing of migrants’
personal data. As ADTs such as blockchain, AI, IoT, and big data analysis
reshape the landscape of migration, they bring both opportunities and
challenges. This volume aims to explore how these technologies are used in
migration management by states and civil society actors and their ethical
implications. Key themes include the impact of ADTs on migrants’ fundamental
human rights such as privacy and data protection, and procedural rights such as
rights to due process, non-discrimination, appeal, and effective remedy.

To this end, we invite submissions from any discipline and methodology that
address the topics listed below, including, but not limited to:

• Ethical frameworks and principles for the use of ADTs in migration management
• Case studies on the implementation of ethical guidelines in migration data
handling
• The impact of digitization on border control
• Surveillance and its effects on migrants
• AI, social media, and big data in migration contexts
• Legal and ethical considerations of digitalization of migration
• Digital activism in migrant advocacy
• Ecocritical migration studies on the human, natural, and technological
relationships

Submission Deadline: January 25, 2025, 11:59 PM (AoE)

Submission Guidelines: Proposals should be no more than 500 words and prepared
for anonymous review. Please send your proposals as a PDF file to
yoldas@ualberta.ca. In a separate PDF attachment, please include your name,
academic affiliation, e-mail address, and proposal title. For more information,
please visit https://informationethics.ca/index.php/irie/cfp-33 to view the
