Dear All, I recently learned about this fantastic educational resource on AI: https://buildingai.elementsofai.com/ It gives an introduction into Bayesian statistics, vector spaces, linear regression, etc. These advanced mathematical tools have been used in science for decades or even more, though they were not called AI. I am wondering why we now call them AI or discuss them under the umbrella of AI? I understand that neural networks feature some kind of analogy with human cognition. But I do not understand how vector algebra and linear regression are for instance related to human intelligence (beyond the fact that they were developed or discovered by human intelligence). These are extremely powerful mathematical models that do facilitate our modern life; they can also get better by themselves ("learn") but what makes us think that they are adequate models / representation of intelligence? To be a bit provocative, it seems that any advanced computationally implemented mathematical model can be nowadays called AI. What is then AI and what is NOT AI? I am confused and I would love to hear what others think. Cheers, Gabor _______________________________________________ Unsubscribe at: http://dhhumanist.org/Restricted List posts to: humanist@dhhumanist.org List info and archives at at: http://dhhumanist.org Listmember interface at: http://dhhumanist.org/Restricted/ Subscribe at: http://dhhumanist.org/membership_form.php
