Symposium on ‘Humanistic AI’

Time and date: Wednesday 19 June
Location: Hybrid event

  * In person: University of Gothenburg (Humanisten, Renströmsgatan 6,
Gothenburg)
  *   Online: on Zoom

Description:

The Gothenburg Research Infrastructure in Digital Humanities (GRIDH) and The
Swedish School of Library and Information Science (SSLIS), University of Borås
are delighted to announce a one-day symposium on ‘Humanistic AI’ to be held
(hybrid event) at the Faculty of Humanities, Gothenburg, Sweden, Wednesday June
19. The symposium is co-sponsored by the national research infrastructures
Huminfra, InfraVis and Swe-Clarin.

The purpose of this symposium is to conduct a first inventory of the state of
the art of what at the Huminfra conference was tentatively referred to as
‘Humanistic AI’ – the emerging field of various humanities practices that use,
develop, and interrogate AI (Fridlund et al. 2024
<https://ecp.ep.liu.se/index.php/hic/article/view/900>) –
primarily in Sweden but also in neighboring countries. We wish to create a
forum for researchers and practitioners within the humanities to present and
discuss experiences and findings related to using and/or developing AI tools
within or for humanities research and cultural heritage practice. The symposium
likewise aspires to set the stage for critical engagement with the epistemic,
ethical, cultural, and societal dimensions of AI technology as it affects practices
within the humanities.

Our aim is to after the symposium invite the presenters to submit their revised
and expanded presentations for publication in a peer-reviewed anthology or
special issue on Humanistic AI.

Keynote: Dr. Lev Manovich, Presidential Professor of Computer Science at the
City University of New York's Graduate Center and the Director of the Cultural
Analytics Lab.

Abstracts:

We invite abstracts for short (5–15 minute) presentations, demonstrations, or
posters in Swedish or English. The abstract should address a topic related to
how AI has or is being used in practice within humanities, cultural heritage or
GLAMs, reflecting one or several of the workshop’s three main themes:

  * Using AI within the humanities
  * Developing AI for the humanities
  * Interrogating AI by the humanities

Fitting topics include, but are not limited to:

  * Collaborations/exchanges between humanists and technical experts to use or
develop AI.
  * The development of AI applications within and for humanities research and
GLAM.
  * Humanities research projects using or developing AI.
  * Humanistic reflection and critique of the implications of AI-tools and
methods for humanistic knowledge production.
  * Critical reflections of the ethical, social, and cultural implications of
AI.
  * Existing or planned programs, modules or individual courses on AI at
humanities faculties (e.g., design, target student groups, content, job market,
evaluation, experiences, lessons-learned).

Presentation proposals should be (i) 100-300 words in length. In the email,
please include (ii) your name and institutional affiliation, and (iii) whether
you would prefer to give a talk in person or online, with (iv) the subject line
Abstract: Humanistic AI to gridh@gu.se<mailto:gridh@gu.se> by Monday May 6.

Proposals will be reviewed by the workshop organizers. Since we wish to be able
to fit as many relevant proposals into the program as possible we reserve the
right to change proposed presentations into poster presentations. Presenters
will be notified of acceptance by Friday May 10.

We particularly encourage proposals from junior scholars and underrepresented
groups in academia.

Attendance:

Attendance is free of charge but will require registration. Instructions for
registration will be sent out in a separate email along with the symposium
program.

Important dates:

(Extended) Deadline for submitting abstract: Monday 6 May
Notification of acceptance: Friday 10 May
Registration for attendance: TBA
Symposium: Wednesday 19 June
