Humanist Discussion Group, Vol. 37, No. 537. Department of Digital Humanities, University of Cologne Hosted by DH-Cologne www.dhhumanist.org Submit to: humanist@dhhumanist.org Date: 2024-04-09 21:18:29+00:00 From: Geoffrey Rockwell <grockwel@ualberta.ca> Subject: Call for Participants in Citizen Science project: The Lives of Literary Characters Dear all, We've recently launched the second phase of our project, The Lives of Literary Characters, which uses language models to identify literary characters for narrative analysis. This will allow us to track changes in characters over time. For example, are characters getting more wealthy or educated? Are there more villains? How have gender balances changed? Right now, we're looking for volunteers to create the training data on Zooniverse. The task involves annotating a given character summary, answering questions like "How old is this character?", "What is the character's estimated level of wealth?" or "What gender would you assign to the character?" We'd be grateful if you could share this project with any parties interested in the applications and intersections of language models. Of note, our project prides itself on our commitment to transparency; both our model and training data will be open-source.
