The Department of Heritage and Antwerp Cultural Heritage Sciences (ARCHES)
research group in the Faculty of Design Sciences is looking for a full-time
(100%) doctoral scholarship holder in the field of digital archaeology.

Position

   - You will work actively on the preparation and defence of a PhD thesis.
   The PhD project, titled ‘Modelling Space-Time Uncertainty in
   Archaeological Excavation Information’, aims to enhance the
   representation of information related to instances of uncertainty across
   space and time encountered during archaeological excavations. The project
   explores how semantically rich graph data models can be useful in this
   context and investigates how representations of uncertainty encountered
   during archaeological excavations can be modelled and integrated into
   existing data models, such as CRMarchaeo.
   - You will publish scientific articles related to the research project.
   - You will carry out a limited number of teaching and research support
   tasks for the Department of Heritage.

Profile

   - You hold a Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics,
   or Physics, and a Master's degree in Archaeology, OR you hold a
   Bachelor's degree in Archaeology, and a Master's degree in Engineering,
   Mathematics, Statistics, or Physics (you may have obtained your Master’s
   degree by the time you start work).
   - If you are a holder of a master's degree issued by a Belgian
   university, you have graduated with at least a 'distinction' mention,
   or an equivalent.
   - Your teaching competences are in line with the University of
Antwerp’s educational
   vision

   - Your research qualities are in line with the faculty and university

   - You act with attention to quality, integrity, creativity and
   cooperation.
   - You are fluent in spoken and written academic English and can provide
   evidence of this if necessary.
   - You have a basic conceptual and practical knowledge of relational and
   graph data models, data standards commonly used in archaeology, and
   semantic web-related technologies.
   - You are a team player and willing to participate in archaeological
   fieldwork for four to eight weeks during late spring, summer, and/or early
   autumn in the Mediterranean.

What we offer

   - We offer a doctoral scholarship for a period of two years. Following a
   positive evaluation, the scholarship can be renewed for another two years.
   - The planned start date is 01 October 2024.
   - Your monthly scholarship amount is calculated according to the scholarship

   doctoral scholarship holders on the pay scales for Contract Research Staff
   (Dutch: Bijzonder Academisch Personeel, BAP).
   - You will receive ecocheques, Internet-connectivity allowance, and a
   bicycle allowance or a full reimbursement of public transport costs for
   commuting.
   - You will do most of your work at City Campus in a dynamic and
   stimulating working environment.
