Maurizio Lana has alerted me to the fact that his message to Humanist
(infra) never appeared. I have no explanation for this error. But it does
give me a chance to emphasise once again that (imagine a stack of
sacred books) I never consciously omit sending out a message without
informing the author of my reason for doing so. This happens very
rarely, fewer than half a dozen times, perhaps only 3 or four since
1987. So, if you do not see your contribution sent out within 2 days or
so, kindly send it again with a note.
Yours,
WM

hi Willard,
i often ask myself similar questions.

on the side of the ordinary, i would like to cite an article published
in Logic(s) Magazine (Abdurahman, J. Khadijah. «Holding to Account:
Safiya Umoja Noble and Meredith Whittaker on Duties of Care and
Resistance to Big Tech». Logic(s) Magazine, 25 dicembre 2021.
https://logicmag.io/beacons/holding-to-account-safiya-umoja-noble-and-meredith-whittaker/):

"Part of the challenge here is that researchers have been socialized in
academia to be apolitical or to think of themselves as scientists and
not as people who have values imbued into the work that they’re doing."

on the side of exceptional, here in Italy we had the oath of allegiance
to fascism that was demanded of university professors by the fascist
regime. 12 out os 1251 refused the oath and for that reason were
expulsed from the University: they were 1% of the total.

i mean that an education is needed so that the persons be capable to
stand. not necessarily to stand _against_ but first of all to stand.
an education to recognize the value of staying standing beyond any
practical advantage or disadvantage.
and that we probably dream that "self-fulfilment through acquisition of
pure knowledge" is also a civil and political education, but it is not
so simple.

(i recall the document now disappeared that our Russian DH colleagues
had put in GDrive against the war.
i didn't save it, how unaware i was.
does someone have a copy?)

Maurizio
