Humanist Discussion Group, Vol. 37, No. 435. Department of Digital Humanities, University of Cologne Hosted by DH-Cologne www.dhhumanist.org Submit to: humanist@dhhumanist.org Date: 2024-02-10 05:12:50+00:00 From: Manfred Thaller <manfred.thaller@uni-koeln.de> Subject: Publication on multimodal editions and modeling Dear Willard, Humanist readers might be interested in a new (open access) book by Tessa Gengnagel: "digital scholarly editions beyond text. modelling art, film, and everything in between" accessible as PDF from https://doi.org/10.11588/arthistoricum.1132 The title, in a sense, says it all. Let me point out what I find attractive about it, nevertheless. That "editions" in a multimedia universe should not be restricted to text only, has quite frequently been noticed recently. The "editions" of a large sector of recent DH discussions, however, focus very much on the sheer availability of various materials of interest, which is far removed from the long tradition of critical editions. Gengnagel's book goes beyond that and tries to derive a concept of variations, from those traditionally identified in a transmitted text, which is applicable also to variations of pictorial programs and, indeed, films. That she does so by an explicit attempt at modelling is interesting in itself.
