Humanist Discussion Group, Vol. 37, No. 242. Department of Digital Humanities, University of Cologne Hosted by DH-Cologne www.dhhumanist.org Submit to: humanist@dhhumanist.org Date: 2023-10-07 12:10:41+00:00 From: Willard McCarty <willard.mccarty@mccarty.org.uk> Subject: two stories of tech The latest London Review of Books 45.19, for 5 October 2023, has two stories that I suspect will interest many here. The first is Jenny Turner, "Naomi Klein"*, on what can happen when a social media 'learning' algorithm gets a hold on a mistaken association between very different individuals, and what we can learn from this. The second is James Vincent, "Prosthetic Brainpower"**, on the history of the pocket calculator. The first of these is freely accessible; the second may be, depending on whether you've been frequenting the LRB and so using up your free article limit. Read them tonight!
