FULL PROGRAM HERE: https://www.resource-media.art/events/ RE:SOURCE – will celebrate Media Art Histories and the role that its main agents have had in the multiple developments of art, science and technology with a focus on the past 60 years. The main historical theme of the conference series – the histories of Media, Art, Science and Technology – forms the core of the event. This will be integrated by a number of sub themes including: • Memory. How to create future memories: documentation, preservation and new technologies (media art conservation, preservation, documentation, archival research, role of researchers in curatorial practice). • Climate Actions, Environment and Public Humanities (public media art that addresses climate emergency and social topics); • Pioneers of Media art (media art history pioneers past and present, artists, curators, new technologies); • Media art history outside and inside the museum (curation, museology, cinema, games, media arts museums); re-enacting of exhibitions, new technologies and curatorial practice. The title ‘RE:SOURCE‘ refers to a sub theme specifically introduced in the MAH Venice edition of the conference series. This theme will be centered on the climate crisis and questions of ecological sustainability considered in all their ramifications analyzed through the lenses of Media Art (Histories). RE:SOURCE will host four days of panels, workshops, exhibitions, performances and keynotes. I’m just emailing to share details for DH conference I am co-organising, which I would be grateful if you could share through your distribution lists where appropriate. The Call for Papers is now open, with a deadline for abstracts of Monday 20th November (2023). I’ve attached a PDF version of the CfP for sharing on social media and in newsletters etc., which can also be found in plain text format below. I’ve also attached this as a file, as detailed on the EADH website. Further details or queries can be made to myself and Dr. Grace Di Méo at interlocked.universe@gmail.com<mailto:interlocked.universe@gmail.com>. Many thanks for your time. Best wishes, Caitlin ourinterlockeduniverse.wordpress.com —---- CALL FOR PAPERS —---- ‘Our Interlocked Universe’: Sociohistorical Network Analysis; Methods, Applications, and New Directions University of Southampton, 26-27th March 2024 Keynote Speaker: Prof. Ruth Ahnert, Queen Mary University of London In his canonical book, Linked, Albert-László Barabási explored the history and prevalence of networks in the world, and how studying them opens new avenues of understanding, predicting that “network thinking is poised to invade all domains of human activity and most fields of human inquiry… aimed at approaching our interlocked universe.” Often influenced by methodologies from the social sciences, this ‘network thinking’ and an interest in the use of digital and computational tools within the humanities continues to flourish. More recently, this has fostered a growing demand to expand on how such interdisciplinary approaches can provide fresh insights into historical narratives. Funded by the National Centre for Research Methods (NCRM), ‘Our Interlocked Universe’ will be an interdisciplinary conference exploring the methods and applications of social network analysis (SNA) within historical contexts, offering a space to engage with compelling demonstrations – both quantitative and qualitative – of historical SNA in practice but also methodological discussions around the specific uses and limitations associated with using SNA in historical research. We invite abstracts of 300 words for 20-minute papers, including a working title and brief presenter biography. Papers should focus on social network analysis within any historical context(s), applying quantitative and qualitative methods or approaches. These may include but are not limited to: - working with network data; - network centrality; - community detection; - network evolution; - network data visualisation; - modelling/simulating networks; - and combining network analysis with other methodologies (such as GIS or linguistics). Abstracts should include details of the methods applied, the historical period studied (all periods and geographical regions will be considered), and the source or data type used. We welcome abstracts from researchers of all career levels and pathways and will be awarding a best paper prize for ECR/PhD speakers. Please direct submission materials or any queries to Dr. Grace Di Méo and Dr. Caitlin Burge at interlocked.universe@gmail.com<mailto:interlocked.universe@gmail.com>. Sincerley, Ulrike Henny-Krahmer --[5]------------------------------------------------------------------------ Date: 2023-09-08 08:51:30+00:00 From: Veijo Pulkkinen <tituvillus@GMAIL.COM> Subject: Symposium: The Born-Digital Challenge in Private Archives: Research Perspectives and Archival Practices, 4–5 October 2023 Symposium: The Born-Digital Challenge in Private Archives: Research Perspectives and Archival Practices Finnish Literature Society – SKS and Society of Swedish Literature in Finland (SLS), Helsinki, Finland, 4–5 October 2023 Today’s literature and other cultural content is increasingly created digitally, which means that the archive sources of the future will, for the most part, be born-digital documents. However, the archival conventions and research practices for born-digital material, such as digitally created manuscripts, emails, and photos, are still in a nascent state in many countries. How born-digital material is acquired, preserved, and made accessible has a crucial impact on its researchability. In addition to the technical requirements, the application of digital forensic tools and methods in the archiving and research of born-digital material in particular raise important legal and ethical questions. To address these issues, the archival research network ARNE (University of Helsinki) is organizing an international two-day symposium together with the archives of the Finnish Literary Society (SKS) and the Society of Swedish Literature in Finland (SLS) that brings together archivists and researchers of literature and digital humanities to discuss and develop archival practices for born-digital material. The first day of the symposium is reserved for four keynote lectures illustrating international research on and archiving practices for born-digital materials. Emmanuela Carbé (University of Siena) will address the methodological and ethical issues involved in working with born-digital literary archives in Italy. Gábor Palkó (Eötvös Loránd University, Budapest) will discuss emails as digital cultural heritage objects. Callum McKean (British Library) will guide us through the processes of capture, description, and access of born-digital material at the British Library. The topic of Thorsten Ries’s(University of Texas, Austin; Ghent University) keynote is the historical digital materiality of born-digital archives and its challenges. [The presentations of the first day can be followed online.] The second day of the symposium will begin with a focus on issues of research and archiving of born-digital material in Finland. The film director and author Markus Nummi and Veijo Pulkkinen (University of Helsinki) will shed light on born-digital materials from donors’ and researchers’ perspectives. Presentations of the collections and archival practices of born-digital material in the National Archives of Finland (KA), and the archives of the Finnish Literature Society (SKS) and the Society of Swedish Literature in Finland (SLS) will be delivered by Iiris Mahjneh (KA), Teemu Hirvonen (SKS) and Maria Miinalainen (SLS). Tapani Joelsson and Tommi Lempinen will present the activities of the digital archaeology team Kasettilamerit (Tape Lamers). Miia Kosonen (Xamk, Digitalia) and Johan Kylander (CSC – IT Center for Science) will discuss born-digital material from the perspective of digital information management and national digital preservation services. The Counsellor of Education Sami Niinimäki (Ministry of Education and Culture)will provide a comment speech. These talks will be held either in Finnish or Swedish. A panel discussion (in English) will be held later in the day with the international keynote speakers, who will discuss the questions and issues raised at the beginning of the day concerning the research on and archiving practices for born-digital material and their future development. Please, registrate to the symposium by September 28, 2023.
