Registration for the 7th Centre for Corpus Research Summer School
CCRSS23 is now open

The summer school takes place from 11th to 14th September 2023

Register here:

languages-cultures-art-history-music/corpus-linguistics-summer-school-2023

More information here:

23/corpus-linguistics-summer-school-2023.aspx

Who is it for?

The summer school is open to undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral
students, as well as researchers who want to improve their skills to apply
corpus methods in their own research.

Our summer school aims to equip participants with critical expertise in
both the theory and practice of corpus-supported linguistic research.

Building on the strengths of our Centre for Corpus Research (CCR)
<https://www.birmingham.ac.uk/research/activity/corpus/index.aspx> and our
guest speakers, we strive to offer participants a learning experience that
benefits their own specific research needs and enriches their experience as
researchers more widely.

There will be the opportunity for participants to present their own work
and receive feedback from our expert team.

Given the specialised nature of the programme, a basic understanding of
corpus linguistics is highly recommended.

What’s the format?

The summer school will be online and consist of synchronous and
asynchronous elements.

Prior to the synchronous part, participants will be expected to complete
asynchronous activities consisting of self-study video lectures and
hands-on materials.

The synchronous part will take place from 11 to 14 September, 2023.

Over the course of four days, participants will be actively involved in two
kinds of sessions.

First, hands-on sessions will put the emphasis on the learning of practical
skills for the purpose of extracting and analysing corpus data of various
kinds, and the application of this knowledge to specific research projects.

Second, participants will learn about current corpus research and
theoretical foundations from our team.

What is it about?

Topics typically covered in the programme include (non-exhaustive list and
subject to change):

Corpus linguistics for media analysis
Analysis of spoken corpora
CQPweb
Introduction to R and tidyverse
Web scraping with R
Digital humanities and the study of fiction
Sign language corpora
Regular expressions
Corpora and legal research
Critical issues in keyness analysis
Behavioral Profiles
Machine learning in corpus linguistics
Corpus-based discourse analysis
Corpus linguistics and language learning

Sinclair lecture

As every year, the annual Sinclair Lecture will take place during the
Summer School.

This year, the Lecture will be delivered on Monday 11 September by our very
own Susan Hunston <https://www.birmingham.ac.uk/staff/profiles/elal/hunston-susan.aspx>.

If you register for the summer school, you are automatically registered for
the Sinclair lecture.

More detail on the Sinclair lecture can be found here:

Digital Academy 2023 - From Uncertainty to Action: Advancing Research with
Digital Data (Digital History, Bielefeld University)

Dear colleagues, dear Digital Humanities enthusiasts,

the Digital Academy once again invites you to a vital exchange on data-based
research and digital methods. This year, we will particularly focus on an issue
that affects the Digital Humanities on all levels: uncertainty. With her concept
of “capta,” Johanna Drucker pointed out that when researchers collect and model
data, they use criteria that are not objectively given. Thus, there always is a
certain perspective that is forced onto our data sets, which highly influences
the possibilities of analysing data. In order to be able to exploit data sets to
their full potential, it is crucial for researchers to reflect on this
perspectivity.

Uncertainty plays a role on various levels: How can we interpret unclear data
within texts, for example ambiguous designations of people or places? In which
formats are data sets available, and how does this affect working with different
analysing tools?

The Digital Academy 2023 will touch upon these questions and many more. In this
context, uncertainty is not supposed to be framed as something deficient that
inevitably blurs data-based research within the Digital Humanities. The aim
instead is to explore and develop strategies that help dealing with digital
research data.

We will discuss these strategies from 25th to 28th September 2023 within an
online format.

  1. Open Space Day: Experts will report on their research projects and
subsequently discuss aspects of their work with the audience. This part of the
program is open to all who are interested.
  2. Three-day workshop: The participants will get the opportunity to present
and discuss their strategies for dealing with uncertainty within their own
research projects. This workshop particularly aims at advanced Masters students,
PhD students, and postdocs.

Participation is free of charge for both parts of the program.

Call for Participation (Three-Day Workshop)

1 Your Contributions

Your contributions (20 mins. presentation, 10 mins. discussion) may deal with
all kinds of possible interpretations of uncertainty with regards to digital
data. We would like you to present strategies you have been using in order to
deal with uncertainty in your own projects. Besides the questions already
mentioned above, other possible questions could be:

  * How do we create relations within databases, in order to answer particular
research questions?
  * Which types of visualisations are particularly suitable for different
research projects?
  * How can we combine qualitative research and hermeneutic methods?
  * Which theories seem to be useful in these contexts?

2 Submissions & Blog Articles

Please submit the following documents to <mailto:digital-academy at uni-
bielefeld.de> digital-academy at uni-bielefeld.de:

  1. Abstract of your contribution (500-750 words excl. bibliography; English
or German).
  2. A short CV.

Based on your abstract and the discussion following your contribution during the
workshop, we would like to invite you to write a blog post that will be
published on the blog of Digital History@UniBielfeld. This way, we can make our
results available to a broader public.

3 Deadline

The extended deadline for submitting contributions is 10 July 2023 (23:59,
MESZ). We will inform about possibilities of participation by July, 28. Further
details about the programme will be published in the course of the summer.

We welcome submissions in German or English. The programme of the Digital
Academy 2023 is bilingual (the Open Space day will be in English only).

If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact us via the
following email address: digital-academy@uni-bielefeld.de<mailto:digital-
academy@uni-bielefeld.de>.
