In response to your query [on investigating data created from finding aids], 
a couple of example papers below but I haven’t found a lot – it seems like a 
sea of untapped possibilities:

Krause, Magia Ghetu, and Elizabeth Yakel. “Interaction in Virtual Archives: The
Polar Bear Expedition Digital Collections Next Generation Finding Aid.” The
American Archivist 70, no. 2 (2007): 282–314.

I am working on a pilot project trying to create a useable database from finding
aid metadata here at the University of Birmingham. Always happy to share ideas
and learn from each other!
