The Roshan Institute for Persian Studies in the School of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures, University of Maryland, College Park, seeks to hire an Assistant Research Professor to serve as the Assistant Director of a 3-year, Mellon Foundation-funded Open Islamicate Texts Initiative Arabic-script OCR Catalyst Project Phase II (AOCP Phase II). This individual will be a scholar practitioner of digital humanities who will provide operational and intellectual leadership to the Open Islamicate texts Initiative (Open ITI) and Arabic-script OCR Catalyst Project (AOCP) Phase II. The initial 12-month appointment period, beginning preferably in January 2023 but possibly later, with a salary of $80,000 (plus benefits, as described here: https://uhr.umd.edu/benefits/ <https://uhr.umd.edu/benefits/>), will be renewable across two additional years. The Assistant Director will work closely with Principal Investigator (PI) Matthew Thomas Miller on ensuring smooth implementation of the AOCP Phase II plan at an operational level. In this leadership role, they will also function as a bridge to the broader digital humanities community and help cultivate AOCP Phase II’s relationships with other projects. Applicants with a PhD in humanities, social sciences, or library/information sciences who have extensive experience in Digital Humanities will be preferred. All applicants must have demonstrated capacity to co-lead projects and programming. Applicants with expertise in text encoding will be especially welcomed, as they will be collaborating on developing Handwritten Text Recognition workflows and OpenITI mARkdown/TEI adaptations for manuscripts and digital text dissemination.
