Humanist Discussion Group, Vol. 35, No. 571. Department of Digital Humanities, University of Cologne Hosted by DH-Cologne www.dhhumanist.org Submit to: humanist@dhhumanist.org Date: 2022-03-07 05:28:08+00:00 From: AEOLIAN Project <Aeolian@lboro.ac.uk> Subject: Postdoc opportunity - EyCon (Visual AI and Early Conflict Photography) Dear all, I am recruiting a postdoc for EyCon (Visual AI and Early Conflict Photography), a new project funded by the AHRC on the UK side and LABEX on the French side. The position is from 1 May 2022 until 31 July 2023. Search for "Eycon" on Loughborough University Vacancies page: https://vacancies.lboro.ac.uk It will suit someone who has a PhD (or in near completion) in digital humanities, archival science, social sciences, computer science or another field related to the project. Description of the project: Recent digitisation efforts of historical photographs by archival institutions have often been done in silo. This is an issue for researchers and archivists, but it also raises the question of public uses of history when it comes to contemporary perspectives on colonial/imperial warfare. Indeed, disconnected visual repositories reinforce deeply entrenched notions of national exceptionalism in France, Britain and in other states with a history of international interventionism and expansionism. Drawing on advanced technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, EyCon aims at connecting, analysing and commenting on these divided repositories to increase the discoverability and usability of overlooked and scattered material on colonial, imperial and international armed conflicts up to 1918.
