That's another argument to use scholarly editions in which one can find an
appropirate annotation:

The Hebrew term <em>hebel</em>,translated <em>vanity</em> or
<em>vain</em>,refers concretely to a mist, vapor, or mere breath,
andmetaphorically to something that is fleeting or elusive (withdifferent
nuances depending on the context). It appears five times inthis verse and in 29
other verses in Ecclesiastes
