Humanist Discussion Group, Vol. 35, No. 454. Department of Digital Humanities, University of Cologne Hosted by DH-Cologne www.dhhumanist.org Submit to: humanist@dhhumanist.org Date: 2022-01-11 15:50:22+00:00 From: Ceruzzi, Paul <CeruzziP@si.edu> Subject: Forthcoming book of Vannevar Bush's writings [...] I want to call your attention to forthcoming book edited by my colleague Gregg Zachary: /The Essential Writings of Vannevar Bush/ (Columbia University Press, 2022). It is a companion volume to Zachary's earlier biography of Bush and consists of selections of Bush’s writings, each with an introduction that places the writing in historical context. The writings cover an enormous field, including many essays with will appeal to SIGCIS members. His 1945 memex essay, "As We May Think," is included as are his writings in the 50s and 60s that elaborate his ideas about the future of desktop information appliances that quickly search, retrieve and "amplify" the "trail of associations" in the human record, increasing its value for civilization. I had the pleasure of reading a draft version of the book and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
