Subject: British Library Chevening Fellowship working with Chinese OCR/HTR

Dear all,

Two years ago we had an open call for a Chevening Fellow to join us at the
British Library to work with Chinese handwritten collections. Unfortunately, we
couldn't go forward with the fellowship due to the pandemic, and therefore we
are now re-advertising it.

The call for applications for a Chevening Fellow in 2022/2023, entitled
"Automating the recognition of historical Chinese handwritten texts," can be
found here:

The successful candidate will explore options for creating machine-readable
texts at scale, focusing on material from Dunhuang, as part of the Stein
collection. This builds on the work that we've been doing here at the Library
towards automating transcription of printed Bangla and handwritten English and
Arabic, see blog post just published:

The call is open until 2 Nov 2021. As previously, only applicants from Mainland
China will be eligible, and they must be resident in their home country at the
time of making their application.

Please feel free to get in touch with any questions!

All the best,

Dr Adi Keinan-Schoonbaert
