Imaging Roman Power in The Cities of the Empire from Augustus to the Tetrarchs (31 BC – AD 297). RESP will investigate how Roman emperors were represented in the visual culture of the provincial cities, on portrait and in full-figure, by comparing and integrating the evidence from local coinage and sculpture. The project is based at Verona University in partnership with the Department of Classics at King’s College (London) and the WMG at Warwick University; it will also involve collaborations with major European museum institutions, in particular the British Museum, the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek in Copenhagen and the Musei Capitolini in Rome. Reporting to the Principal Investigator, Dr Dario Calomino, the post holder will be in charge of developing and managing digital applications for the project. The candidate’s main tasks will be to design and implement a database tailored for the RESP research team on Roman provincial portraits and for the research on the provincial representations of the emperor in full-figure, on which the PI’s work will focus. The researcher will also be in charge of designing the RESP project’s website and setting up the systems of data storage and data sharing that will be used by all the team members. The postholder will also act as the liaison officer with external partners (museums, state antiquity offices, universities) with which the PI will need to engage to acquire, use and publish digital data, and as the PI’s assistant in communicating with the ERC and other stakeholders involved in the project. Applicants may have a range of the following skills: - Good knowledge of IT tools and technologies used in Digital Humanities; - Proficiency and experience in database designing and management; - Good communication and interpersonal skills; - Ability to engage with project partners at an international level; - Desirable research criteria are knowledge and experience in using 3D applications to the study of cultural heritage, and classical archaeology in particular, which will play a prominent role in the RESP research. The post is suitable for post-doctoral candidates, but BA/MA students who wish to pursue an academic career in Digital Humanities are encouraged to apply. The appointment starts on 1st September 2021; the gross salary is € 30.000 per year (€ 24.425 after taxes).
