Humanist Discussion Group, Vol. 34, No. 323. Department of Digital Humanities, University of Cologne Hosted by DH-Cologne www.dhhumanist.org Submit to: humanist@dhhumanist.org Date: 2021-04-11 07:25:36+00:00 From: Willard McCarty <willard.mccarty@mccarty.org.uk> Subject: an unpublished study of early reactions to computing With the author's permission, I have uploaded to the Internet Archive the following valuable study, given as a lecture at Penn State (U.S.) in 2003: Charles N. Yood, "Man Vs. The Machine. Giant Brains, Computer Automation And Fears Of Technological Unemployment, 1945-1965". It is to be found at (https://archive.org/details/2003.-yood-man-vs.-the-machine.-giant-brains- computer-automation-and-fears-of-te) Charlie Yood sought "greener pastures", as he's said, shortly thereafter. Some of us wish that those would have turned out to be in academia and that Yood had gone on to write more about this subject. You may be interested in his book, Hybrid Zone: Computers and Science at Argonne National Laboratory, 1946-1992 (Docent Press, 2013).
