Data Science Research at Elsevier.
Why Would a Science Publisher Do R&D?

Speakers:
Georgios Tsatsaronis, VP Data Science, Research Content Operations
Marius Doornenbal, Distinguished Engineer, Research Technology
Anita de Waard, VP Research Collaborations

Abstract: Scientific communication has changed dramatically over the
last 25 years. In far less than a lifetime, all communication has gone
digital, and vastly increased in both speed and volume. Over this time,
Elsevier has transformed itself from a traditional print publisher into
an information solutions provider. In a new phase of this
transformation, Elsevier is accelerating its efforts to combine the
scientific and medical literature with a wide range of additional
sources of data to create new ways of delivering value to customers in
the research and healthcare markets we serve. The data science community
at Elsevier, spread across our various businesses and embedded within
our product development teams, is central to this effort.

In this talk, we will
(1) give an overview of the changing landscape of scientific communication;
(2) describe the organization and focus of our data science teams and
the challenges we face, and
(3) the principles we are applying to the creation of new data products.

To make this practical we will provide a glimpse of the range of data
solutions being delivered to internal and external customers, and touch
on a few examples of near-term and long-term data science projects which
exploit recent advances in automated knowledge base construction using
neural approaches to natural language processing. We will conclude with
a brief discussion of potential future collaborations, including
research internships with our NLP/Data Science groups.

Dear all,

As you know, for newcomers to the DH field, figuring out what it’s about and its
potential for research so as to start off on this path can prove challenging,
all the more so when financial and technical resources are scarce. Conversely,
for researchers in this area, getting international visibility for small-scale
projects in the profusion of current initiatives is no small feat.

The ‘Inspire DH’ video competition is meant to address such issues, providing
examples of engaging, yet accessible, DH projects to neophytes to invigorate
their own work while helping those who are already exploring its possibilities
to get wider recognition.

If by yourself or with a small team, you’ve completed with limited resources an
ingenious DH project which might be a source of inspiration to others in various
disciplines, please consider submitting a 10-to-15-minute video to share your
experience . The best three entries will win a tablet and have their videos
subtitled and shared via the Web TV of the Grenoble Alpes University (France).

The competition is open to all so please share widely ! The layout of the video
is free: be creative and thought-provoking!

The deadline for submission has now been extended to March 30, 2021.

Bien cordialement,

Géraldine Castel
