Subject: Re: 9.635 on the tenure flap
Willard McCarthy: I don't think you owe us an apology of any kind for
forwarding the various, unedited messages on tenure. Most of us work at
universities; many of us have tenure or hope to get it. Surely the vigor
of the humanities depends more on tenure than do other disciplines in the
academy, since the humanities have fewer direct supporters in business
and industry. The president at Minnesota contends that tenure there will
not be thrown out but merely adjusted. He might convince me if this
discussion were taking place under different economic circumstances. But
in the midst of so-called downsizing in both sectors, I am made very
nervous about the intentions behind this tinkering.
