Abstract: 

This talk will discuss the training and education of scholarly editors. It
is well-known that creating a digital edition requires a diverse skill set
that includes domain knowledge, and methodological as well as technical
know-how. As a result, the question “what (and how) do we teach students of
digital scholarly editing?” continues to engross practitioners and
educators alike. Indeed this question formed the incentive for the "Companion
for Digital Editing Methods
<https://en.huygens.knaw.nl/projecten/a-companion-for-digital-editing-
methods/>",
an online platform for the study and knowledge exchange of digital editing
methods (2022 - ...). Contributors to the Companion are asked to foreground
the methodological aspects of their editorial work. By doing so, we aim to
overcome traditional disciplinary boundaries that –– against general
expectations –– have continued to prevail in the digital paradigm. The
potential of this approach is illustrated with examples from two ongoing
projects at the Huygens Institute of the History of The Netherlands. The
first project concerns the design and development of collation software
that can deal with TEI-encoded transcriptions of literary historical
documents (2016 - ...). The project is a collaboration between textual
scholars and software engineers and exemplifies how a focus on the
methodology improves communication, learning, and the research itself. The
second project bridges the gap between textual editors and historians by
applying typical textual scholarship methods (transcription, TEI-XML
encoding, automated collation) to a use case from political history.

Bio:

Dr Elli Bleeker
<https://en.huygens.knaw.nl/medewerkers/elli-bleeker/> works as a
researcher at the DHLab of the Huygens Institute for the History of the
Netherlands <https://dhlab.nl/>. She specialises in digital scholarly
editing with a focus on modern manuscripts, genetic criticism, and
semi-automated collation. As a Research Fellow in the Marie
Sklodowska-Curie funded network DiXiT (2013–2017), she received advanced
training in manuscript studies and XML technologies for text modelling. To
enthuse others for the research field of (digital) scholarly editing, she
set up the "Companion to Digital Editing Methods". She is associate editor
of the journal Variants, board member of the European Society for Textual
Scholarship and the DHBenelux Steering Committee, and she recently became a
member of the Maatschappij der Nederlandse Letterkunde.
