        Subject: because it's important

Some here will likely know about Rosalind Picard's work in 'affective
computing', the field that she pioneered, perhaps from her 1997 book by
that title. But I'm writing to recommend her inspirational IEEE article,
"Affective Computing: From Laughter to IEEE", in the inaugural issue of
the IEEE Transactions on Affective Computing (2010). I recommend this 
in the 'required reaading' category for those just getting started, 
specifically for her comment in it, after describing her daredevil tenure 
case, that,

> The risk I had taken to start out in an almost totally new area a
> year before submitting my tenure case had certainly not hurt my
> career. But I never did it for my career, I did it because I believed
> then, and I still believe, that affective computing is an extremely
> important area of research.
